Like last week’s post, we’re looking into home decorating trends of the past that are making a serious resurgence into cool and contemporary.
Wallpaper used to be a bane for home buyers of older homes – the process of removing the tacky and outdated old wallpaper that seemed to suffocate every room, seemed never-ending and frustrating.
With the wallpaper trend finding its feet again – how can we utilize it beautifully to add character and depth to our home interiors?
THE ARRAY OF CHOICE.
Choosing which wallpaper design isn’t just about the pattern. Will you do one statement wall? Or the whole room? And if you’re wallpapering a big room, do you use a smaller-patterned design or a larger one? And then there’s the myriad of choices in patterns and colors and even textures and finishes.
Along with the seemingly endless options, what all homeowners will want to consider (and this goes for any trending interior design) is the longevity of their choice – i.e ‘Will I hate this in a year?’.
WHERE TO START.
Open up your Instagram and Pinterest, and start searching and saving. Create a mood board of favorites and even make a list of what to avoid or what you really don’t like.
Once you have an idea of the style or design, head on over to an online retailer to sort through the options and costs. Some of our favorites include Graham Brown and Jupiter10, as well as smaller retailers with less selection but some interesting designs like Burke Decor and Lulu and Georgia.
Filter by color, pattern, texture/finish – and even room type. Narrow it down to a few choices and then order samples. Don’t skip this part! It’s important to see the patterns and colors in person, as we all know that sometimes online shopping can leave us a little frustrated when we don’t quite get what we thought we were ordering.
TRENDS THAT WON’T EXPIRE.
(HOPEFULLY)
Year after year, there are a few wallpaper trends and wallpaper designs that seem to endure. The trends aren’t so dissimilar to those we spoke about in our post about trending tiles – industrial and botanical design trends make the cut here too amongst wallpaper.
Maximalist is also a rather popular trend – albeit more bold – and suits accents walls and gives a mural feel for those wishing to really make a certain room pop. Just be careful here, as some of the patterns will give you major throwback memories to your grandma’s rose-wallpapered guest bathroom…
OTHER WALLPAPER TRENDS.
ENDLESS STYLES TO CHOOSE FROM
These vary – but lately we’re seeing a Scandinavian-style wallpapering trend focused on line art. And you’ll see plenty of wall panelling paper going up especially in bedrooms, to create texture and elements where there are none. And there’s always metallics (which loosely fit in with the industrial theme) chosen to give rooms or accents walls a more luxurious or high-end hotel feel.
Other popular wallpaper designs include textured + woven-look wallpaper, bold contemporary modern / geo-styles, as well as some rather stunning watercolor wall mural paper.
