The design of the home, by KAA Design Group and P2 Design, both “looks forward into a bright future for residential living while respecting the historical reference of indigenous California architecture.” This intent is translated into the building with contemporary wood and glass forms, fused and integrated with solid plaster elements indicative of native Mission architecture brought to California in the 15th century.
One of the stated objectives of this VISION House Los Angeles was to “blur the lines between the natural and built environments.” To achieve this, the home is designed for “whole lot living”… where everyday living functions between the indoor and outdoor environments occur naturally and seamlessly. To accomplish this, the architects specified expansive glass walls at all access points that disappear to accommodate a transparent experience of the home’s interior space and exterior gardens.
The landscape is a beautiful compliment to the design objective. Inviting gardens around the entire periphery of the building, at every access point, spread out to maximize the use of the entire property. In the front yard, a garden seating area and water feature were designed to address and welcome the neighborhood into this special home. A peaceful, meandering path leads visitors to a secluded entry courtyard to the homes entrance. Once inside, an open living plan including formal and informal dining, family, kitchen and utility spaces open to the rear gardens with two transparent walls of glass. Outdoor living is enhanced with a covered and protected loggia — an outdoor living room with fireplace for year-round enjoyment.
In all aspects of the design and finish specifications, sustainable, green, re-cycled, re-purposed, intelligent, healthy and innovative products, means and methods were carefully addressed by the VISION House Los Angeles team. The home is focused on optimized home performance, durability, energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor air quality … with efficient systems and sustainable materials.
